Inquiry Learning

Our Inquiry Learning Program encourages students to be curious, engaged, and active participants in their own learning. Through inquiry lessons, students investigate big ideas and essential questions, exploring topics across a range of curriculum areas such as Science, History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Design & Technologies.

Our inquiry units promote questioning, exploration, and deep thinking. Within these lessons students make connections between what they already know and new concepts, fostering a sense of ownership and purpose in their learning. It is a time where our students are engaged in doing and making.

How It Works:

Each term, students engage in an inquiry unit based around a central concept or core knowledge topic. These units are carefully planned to align with the Victorian Curriculum version 2.0 and often integrate multiple learning areas.

Key Features of our inquiry units:

Student Voice and Choice: Students are encouraged to ask questions, make decisions, and direct aspects of their learning journey.

Real-World Connections: Learning is made meaningful through local and global links, guest speakers, excursions, and hands-on projects.

Critical and Creative Thinking: Students learn to research, evaluate sources, think critically, solve problems, and present their findings.

Collaboration and Communication: Inquiry lessons often foster teamwork, discussion, and reflection, helping students develop key interpersonal skills.

By developing inquiry skills, students at SFDS become independent learners who are equipped to explore the world around them with curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning.
