Introduction

At St Francis de Sales we understand that students’ wellbeing is the cornerstone to their success. For us, wellbeing encompasses everything that the school community does to meet the spiritual, cognitive, physical, emotional and social needs of all our students. We draw strongly on the principles of positive education to support the development of student wellbeing, which is evident in a school culture that prioritises positive relationships, student engagement, resilience, and an understanding of and value for self.

Our work in this area is underpinned by two key frameworks: Positive Behaviour for Learning, and the Berry Street Education Model. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is tiered intervention framework that forms the basis of our whole school approach to teaching about and responding to behaviour. The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) provides strategies for teaching and learning that enables teachers to increase student engagement and develop authentic self-management strategies based on their understanding of how the brain works during different times.
